Why it matters

Directory tiers are the manufacturer’s own program. A contractor that advertises the product without a listing may still install it well, but the manufacturer has not named it in its directory, which can matter for warranty options.

What this number can’t tell you

• Directory status changes; this is a dated observation.
• A directory listing is not an endorsement by this publication or a guarantee of an installation.
• Contractors can install fiber cement without belonging to the program.

What to do with it

• Look the contractor up in the James Hardie directory yourself before signing.
• Ask which product and labor warranty applies to your proposal, in writing.
