EDITORIAL STANDARDS

The lines we don’t cross.

What Siding Contractor Benchmark leaves out of its contractor records, rankings and data files, and the reasons.

A contractor record here is a set of dated observations with sources attached. Here is what deliberately stays out of those records, whatever the request.

No rank is for sale

The formulas have no paid-placement input. No contractor in this edition holds a sponsored position, and a manufacturer tier, badge or description cannot be bought.

No borrowed credentials

A contractor that advertises a brand is not presented as certified by it. James Hardie status is shown as a named profile in the manufacturer’s own directory, or labeled as advertised by the company and not verified.

No license verdict from a missing match

Neither Johnson County nor Kansas City, Missouri issues a siding-specific license, and many siding jobs need no permit. When no license record matches a contractor, we say so as a research limit. We never describe a company as unlicensed on that basis.

No one’s personal file

County and city licensing files list the people who qualify a company. We publish the company, its license class and status, not the qualifying individuals’ names, and never anyone’s home address or personal phone number. An owner who names themselves on their own company site may appear in our note on that source.

No review text

Rankings use a matched Google rating and review count with the date observed. Reviews themselves and reviewer names are not copied, and ratings stay out of the downloadable data files.

No changes on request alone

Send a correction with a source and we recheck it. A record changes when the source supports the change; rankings move only in a new edition.

No unsourced claims

Complaints, allegations and judgments that cannot be tied to a dated source stay out. Company descriptions of their own work are labeled as company statements.
